When it comes to e-commerce, there`s little dispute that Amazon is the king. Amazon captured approximately half of all e-commerce sales in 2021 in the U.S. alone. And with global e-commerce sales expected to top $5.4 trillion this year, there`s little doubt that the world`s biggest marketplace will continue to dominate the e-commerce industry.

That`s one reason why we`ve focused so much attention on optimizing our clients` Amazon content. After more than 200 different experiments using our proven methodologies, we`ve helped clients realize an average 40 percent increase in buying rate when comparing product variants.

While Amazon certainly shouldn`t be ignored, what about other e-commerce marketplaces? In the U.S., Walmart used to lag Amazon significantly. But today, Walmart is one of the largest e-tailers, growing a whopping 87 percent in 2021, some of which can be attributed to the growth of third-party sellers on Walmart Marketplace. And while eBay seems to be struggling to keep up, it still managed to grow approximately 10 percent in YoY sales 2021. That doesn`t even account for other e-commerce platforms such as Instacart, Target, or even Ali Express in China and Coupang in Korea.

The truth is that no matter where you are in the world, no matter what platform you want to use, there will likely be growth this year and in coming years. There are hundreds of online marketplaces around the world that cater to global e-commerce buyers, regional or local consumers, or niche audiences. And that`s an opportunity e-tailers of all types should not miss.

Not All e-Commerce Platforms Are the Same

Although Amazon has certainly set the bar in terms of what consumers expect to see from an e-commerce platform, that doesn`t mean all platforms work the same way. Each platform has different layouts, search and filtering capabilities, and customer experiences.

Some platforms allow you to add products to your shopping cart directly from the search results page. Hero images have varying spec requirements and rules in how they are used across different platforms. Sponsored products aren`t always in the same position on results pages. The list of differences goes on and succeeding on each platform requires testing and experimentation. If a seller wants to succeed on each, they need to understand that each platform most likely requires a different approach.
